1984 Opel Manta 400 Classic Car Auctions
This 1983 Opel Manta 400 is one of just 245 road-going examples built to homologate the car to FIA Group B regulations. Finished in rare Astro Silver with the Opel Blitz Logo interior trim, the Manta 400 also has the desirable Irmscher wide wheel-arch extensions - fitted to only 59 of the road-going cars - plus the later four-slot grille and three-piece spoiler.

A rare, rally-bred 1984 Opel Manta 400 in show standard condition will be offered for sale at Classic Car Auctions' (CCA) December Sale taking place at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre on 2nd December. Built as one of only 245 examples made to homologate the model for Group B rallying, this particular car was imported into the UK by Tony.

The Group B homoligation model replacing the Opel Ascona 400, it hit the Rally world as Audi started racing with the quattro AWD, all RWD cars were outclassed overnight. The street version was build 245times the engine was delivered with 144hp (claimed most engines were stronger) but could be easy upgraded to 275hp, customers could choose the Group B wide body kit from factors or the small.

The Manta A was released in September 1970, two months ahead of the then new Opel Ascona on which it was based. A competitor to the Ford Capri, it was a two-door "three-box" coupé, and featured distinctive round tail lights, quite similar to those on the Opel GT and which in fact were used on the GT in 1973, its final model year. It took its name, and a few minor styling cues, from the Manta.

The Manta B 400's greatest success was winning the rear-wheel-drive class in the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally along with fourth place overall. Erwin Weber and Gunther Wanger also won the German Rally Championship in 1983. At the NLS (formerly VLN) on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, an Opel Manta B 400 still competes today and enjoys a large fan base.
